A water leak can spread further than the visible puddle. It may travel beneath flooring, behind skirting, into wall cavities or through a ceiling below. Fast action matters, but speed should follow a safe sequence. Rushing into an electrically unsafe or contaminated area creates a larger emergency.

Use this checklist for orientation and documentation. Major, contaminated or hidden water damage requires appropriately qualified help.

Make the site safe

Keep occupants and pets away from the affected area. If water may have reached electrical equipment, wiring or outlets, do not enter or operate switches. Contact emergency services or a licensed electrician as appropriate.

Identify the water source. Turn off a safe, accessible isolation valve if you know how; otherwise call the building manager, plumber or relevant emergency contact. Water from sewage, outdoor flooding or an unknown source should not be treated as routine clean water.

Record the starting condition

Photograph the source, affected rooms, damaged items and the path water appears to have taken. Note the time the leak was discovered and, if known, when it began. Contact the insurer early and follow its instructions about emergency work and retained items.

Create a simple room sketch. Mark wet flooring, wall bases, adjoining rooms and any level below. This helps a restoration professional check the apparent boundaries rather than starting again from memory.

Remove liquid water where safe

Extraction is more efficient than relying on evaporation to remove a puddle. Use suitable equipment only when electrical conditions and the water source make it safe. Move dry contents out of the moisture path without spreading contamination to unaffected rooms.

For small, low-risk surface clean-up, fold multi-purpose microfibre cloths into several working faces and change them when loaded. Colour-coded cloths can separate tasks, but label the system as well as relying on colour. Launder or discard cloths according to the contamination and supplier instructions.

Cloths are for accessible surface moisture; they cannot confirm that carpet underlay, plasterboard, insulation or timber assemblies are dry.

Begin a controlled drying setup

Once standing water has been removed, evaporation and moisture removal need to work together. Air movement helps water leave wet materials, while dehumidification removes vapour from the air. Close or open the building strategically according to outdoor conditions and the drying plan rather than automatically opening every window.

Equipment must suit the volume, temperature, moisture load, power and access. Check beyond the obvious edge

A visual inspection should be supported by appropriate moisture measurement. Compare affected materials with dry references and record repeatable locations. A wall can feel dry while moisture remains at the base or behind the finish.

If readings are not improving, investigate. There may be a continuing leak, trapped wet layer, closed cavity, insufficient airflow, outside-air infiltration or equipment issue. Adding machines without identifying the cause can waste power while the damage continues.

Clean according to the source

Drying and cleaning are different tasks. The water category, surface and elapsed time influence what can be cleaned and what may need removal. Follow product labels and safety data sheets, select personal protective equipment for the actual exposure, and never mix cleaning chemicals.

Sewage, mould, hazardous building materials, large losses and affected HVAC systems need professional controls. Porous possessions that cannot be cleaned and dried may not be salvageable.

Verify before repairs

Do not seal, paint or replace finishes solely because the room feels comfortable again. Final material readings should support a defensible dry standard, and the original source must be repaired. Keep photos, readings, invoices and a record of removed materials.

The first day is about controlling the event: protect people, stop the source, document the loss, extract accessible water and establish a measured drying plan. A clear sequence now can prevent weeks of avoidable uncertainty later.
